Nature Walk
See, Touch, Smell,
Discover & Have Fun!

Autumn is a great time to get outside and immerse yourself in nature!
Breathe in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun or the splash of the raindrops on your skin and get curious!
We've put together a list on what to bring and what to look out for on your nature walk.
What to bring:
  • Comfortable shoes - very important!
  • Backpack
  • Paper and crayons – to do some bark rubbing and leaf prints
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Magnifying glass
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Umbrella – not for the rain but to catch what falls when you shake a tree!
  • Bug box
Checklist
  1. Listen, how many of the following sounds can you hear?
    • The wind
    • A river or water flowing
    • Leaves crackling underfoot
    • Animals such as cows, sheep or the birds
  2. Collect the following items from the ground and make a college:
    • pinecones
    • leaves
    • seeds
  3. Draw a picture of something that you see on your walk or make a bark rubbing!
  4. Identify the following parts of the tree:
    • Trunk
    • Bark
    • Roots
    • Leaves
    • Branches
  5. Look out for the following items:
    • Mosses
    • Fruit
    • Edible plants and mushrooms (take care to be able to identify what can be eaten – if in doubt throw it away!)
    • Birds nests
    • Spider webs
    • Dens
    • Burrows
    • Animal tracks, trails and footprints
  6. Jump in the mud (make sure you have your wellies on!) and have fun!
