What you will need:
-
Small shovel or trowel
-
Bucket of water
-
Newspaper
-
Mulch (like wood chips or straw)
-
Gardening gloves (optional)
-
A stick or sign to label the tree (optional)
What to do:
1. Pick a Good Spot
Choose a sunny area with space for the tree to grow.
Make sure it's not too close to buildings or underground pipes.
2. Dig the Hole
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
Take turns digging- it’s part of the fun!
3. Take the Tree Out
Carefully remove the tree from its pot or wrap.
4. Plant the Tree
Place the tree in the hole.
Make sure it’s standing straight.
Fill in the hole gently with soil, patting it down but not too hard.
5. Water It Well
Pour water slowly around the base of the tree.
6. Add Mulch
Spread newspaper in a circle around the tree (but not touching the trunk). Top with mulch. This helps keep the tree warm and moist.
7. Celebrate and Name the Tree!
Name your tree or decorate a sign for your tree
Take a photo to mark the occasion.
