About National Tree Day
A Day to Celebrate, Discover and Learn About Trees
National Tree Day is an annual celebration of trees for primary schools across Ireland, organised by the
Tree Council of Ireland.
It's a day to step outside, look at the trees around us, and discover just how important they are for wildlife, our environment, and the places where we live.
Through activities, learning resources and hands-on exploration, National Tree Day encourages children
to learn about trees, discover the wildlife they support and understand why planting, protecting and caring for trees matters.
And, most importantly, it's a day to enjoy trees!
A Tree Day Tradition
National Tree Day has been inspiring schools to celebrate and learn about trees for many years.
Since the first Tree Day in 1997, generations of schoolchildren across Ireland have taken part, planting trees, exploring nature, learning to identify different species, and discovering the important role trees play in our lives and our environment.
Each National Tree Day brings new opportunities to explore, discover and celebrate the wonderful world of trees.
And one familiar face has been helping along the way...
Meet Sammy Squirrel!
Sammy Squirrel is National Tree Day's woodland guide.
Curious about trees, wild about nature and always ready for an adventure, Sammy helps young explorers discover more about Ireland's trees and the wildlife that depends on them.
You'll find Sammy popping up throughout the Tree Day website with challenges, activities, facts and plenty of tree-mendous discoveries!
National Tree Day is proudly supported by Glennon Brothers, whose partnership with the Tree Council of Ireland helps make National Tree Day possible for primary schools across Ireland.
Now supporting National Tree Day for a second year, Glennon Brothers' support enables 2,000 free tree saplings, along with educational resources and activities, to be provided to primary schools nationwide.
A third-generation Irish family business established in Longford in 1913, Glennon Brothers has more than a century of experience in forestry and timber.
Sustainability is central to its business, from the renewal of forests to the role timber can play as a renewable construction material and carbon store.
